A hands-on photo evening is coming up! On Tuesday, October 20, join us for a Street Photography live shoot in downtown Saskatoon. We’re also looking ahead to several November submission deadlines, including two on the same night, so now’s a good time to check your images and plan your entries.

Whether you’re joining us for the shoot, preparing a photo for review, or simply keeping an eye on what’s ahead, here are the dates and details to know.

Tuesday, October 20: Street Photography Live Shoot

Our next club meeting is a hands-on clinic: Live Shoot: “Street Photography.”

  • When: Tuesday, October 20, 7:00–9:00 p.m.
  • Where: Meet in front of the Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon
  • Event details: Live Shoot: Street Photography

Street photography is about noticing what’s unfolding around you: the people, gestures, patterns, and passing moments that can make an everyday scene feel like a story. You don’t need to arrive with a finished idea. Start by looking around, then give yourself time to notice how the scene changes.

A few ways to approach the evening:

  • Look for layers. Notice how people, buildings, signs, and reflections overlap in the frame.
  • Pay attention to light. A patch of brightness or a long shadow can help guide the viewer’s eye.
  • Watch for moments. A small gesture, a meeting of shapes, or a brief interaction may be the detail that makes your photograph work.
  • Try more than one composition. Change your position or framing and see how that shifts the feeling of the image.
  • Be considerate. Stay aware of the people around you and approach street scenes with respect.

You can use the camera you’re comfortable with. The main goal is to observe, experiment, and make photographs with intention.

Mark These November Deadlines

All submissions are online and close at 10:00 p.m. Saskatoon time on the date listed. Check the individual event details before submitting so you know the entry limit and category.

Sunday, November 1: CAPA Monochrome

Submit one digital “Monochrome” entry for the CAPA Club Competition by 10:00 p.m.

If you’re considering an entry, take a little time to review it in black and white. Look at the balance of light and dark, the range of tones, and whether the subject still reads clearly without colour.

Thursday, November 5: Two Submissions Due

Both online deadlines are 10:00 p.m. Saskatoon time:

  • Street Photography Photo Review: Submit up to two digital “Street Photography” entries. See the Photo Review deadline.
  • Fall Competition – Still Life: Submit one digital “Still Life” entry. It must be Monochrome, in the spirit of the Club’s 90th anniversary. See the Still Life deadline.

These are different opportunities, so check the details for each one and make sure your image is submitted to the right category. If you’re working on a still life, try simplifying the frame: remove anything that distracts from your subject, then look at how shape, texture, and tonal contrast carry the composition.

Looking Ahead: November 3 Presentation

The next listed presentation is on Tuesday, November 3, at 7:00 p.m. Join us at McClure United Church for a presentation by Nina Henry (Saskatoon):

“The Philippines: The Joy and Challenge of Travel Photography”

Travel photography asks you to respond to unfamiliar places while making choices about timing, composition, and what details deserve a frame. If that’s a subject you enjoy, or one you’re curious to explore, this is a chance to spend an evening with a presentation focused on the joys and challenges of photographing while travelling.

The venue is McClure United Church, 4025 Taylor Street East. For general meeting information, doors open at 6:30 p.m.; use the east door nearest the parking lot. Free parking and step-free access are available.

Later Heads-Up: November 26

There’s another group of entries due later in the month. By 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 26, submit:

  • Summer Fun: one digital image
  • Fall Field Trip: one digital image
  • Treasure Hunt: one set of five digital images

The Treasure Hunt topics are The Letter H, Harvest Gold, Hang, Horse, and Hat. Minimal post-processing and manipulation are required for this set. Members vote on these three competitions online.
