Next Week at the Club: Memories of the Grey Cup

There’s plenty to look forward to with the Saskatoon Photography Club this week and next. You can join us for a photo walk, enjoy an evening of sports photography and storytelling, prepare images for upcoming competitions, or make plans for our fall field trip.

Whether you’re a long-time member, a prospective member, or simply looking for a welcoming photography club in Saskatoon, you’re invited to take part.

Here’s what’s coming up.

This Saturday: CAPA Coast to Coast Photo Walk

Autumn photography along the Saskatoon riverbank

Saturday, September 19, 2026 · 9:00 a.m.

We’re joining photographers across Canada for the CAPA Coast to Coast Photo Walk 2026 — Saskatoon.

Meet at the Saskatoon Weir on Spadina Crescent East at 9:00 a.m. The walk is open to everyone:

  • CAPA members
  • Saskatoon Photography Club members
  • Guests and non-members
  • Curious beginners
  • Smartphone photographers and experienced camera users

Bring a camera of any kind — even a smartphone — and bring a friend.

A route through nature and the city

The planned route will loop from the Saskatoon Weir:

  1. Across the CP train bridge
  2. Along the east riverbank
  3. Across the Broadway Bridge into downtown
  4. Back along the west riverbank
  5. Returning to the weir

There will be plenty of opportunities for river views, bridges, urban scenes and changing perspectives along the way. A lunch stop in Rotary Park is likely, so you can plan to stay for part or all of the outing.

Walk lead: Cathleen Mewis

You can find the full details on the CAPA Coast to Coast Photo Walk event page.

Next Tuesday: Memories of the Grey Cup

Tuesday, September 22, 2026 · 7:00–9:00 p.m.

Our next Tuesday meeting features “Memories of the Grey Cup”, a photographic journey of the Grey Cup in Regina told by local professional CFL photographers:

  • Liam Richards
  • Matt Smith
  • Derek Mortensen
  • Steve Hiscock

If you enjoy sports photography, live events, documentary work or visual storytelling, this is a night you won’t want to miss. The presentation will offer a look at the Grey Cup through the eyes of photographers who work in the fast-moving world of Canadian football.

Deadline reminder: Nature / Wildlife

Thursday, October 1, 2026 · 10:00 p.m. Saskatoon time

You have about two weeks to choose and submit your best image for the CAPA Nature / Wildlife Club Competition.

Members may submit one digital “Nature / Wildlife” entry. If you already have a strong candidate in your files, now is a good time to review it carefully. Look at the subject, light, background, focus and overall impact. If you’re still deciding, consider setting aside a little time this week to compare your strongest options.

Deadline callout: Submit by Thursday, October 1 at 10:00 p.m. Saskatoon time.

Use the SPC submissions page to submit your image. The CAPA Nature / Wildlife deadline page also has the event details.

Another deadline: Fall Competition – Animal

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · 10:00 p.m. Saskatoon time

The next competition deadline follows one week later. For the Fall Competition – Animal, submit one digital “Animal” entry.

There’s one important creative requirement: the image must be Monochrome, in the spirit of the Club’s 90th anniversary.

That gives you time to think beyond simply converting a colour image to black and white. Consider how monochrome treatment might strengthen texture, shape, contrast and mood. An animal portrait, a wildlife moment or a strong study of form can all work differently when colour is removed.

Deadline callout: Submit by Thursday, October 8 at 10:00 p.m. Saskatoon time.

Visit the submissions page when you’re ready. You can also review the Fall Competition – Animal deadline in the calendar.

Coming up: Members Orientation

Photography club members gathering for an orientation and discussion

Tuesday, September 29 · 7:00 p.m.

Our Members Orientation will take place at McClure United Church.

The orientation is free, and members, guests and prospective members are welcome. Hosted by Scott Prokop, the evening will include discussions about the club website and submissions.

If you’re new to the club, this is a helpful opportunity to learn how things work and ask questions. If you’ve been involved for a while, you may still find it useful as a refresher — especially with upcoming competitions and deadlines.

Plan ahead: Fall Field Trip

Autumn landscape photography in Saskatchewan

Saturday, October 3 · 9:00 a.m.

Our Fall Field Trip will be a day of fall photography around Outlook and Lake Diefenbaker.

Meet at: Western Development Museum in Saskatoon
Start time: 9:00 a.m.
Contact: Howard Ruston at 306-717-1004

Start thinking about what you’d like to photograph as the season changes. Fall can offer warm colour, softer light, reflections, wide prairie views and plenty of opportunities to slow down and look closely.

Stay connected with the club

From a national photo walk to a Grey Cup presentation, upcoming competitions and a fall field trip, there are many ways to participate with the Saskatoon Photography Club.

Bring your camera. Bring your questions. Bring a friend.

We’d love to see you at the walk, the Tuesday meeting, the orientation or an upcoming outing. Check the club calendar for the latest details, and use the submissions page before the competition deadlines.

We look forward to capturing, sharing and learning with you!
