A new season is almost here!
Whether you are picking up a camera for the first time, returning for another year, or already preparing images for national competition, next week is a great time to reconnect with photography in Saskatoon.
Our season begins with Club Information Night on Tuesday, September 15, followed by the CAPA Coast to Coast Photo Walk on Saturday, September 19. We also have several important October deadlines to keep on your radar.
Bring a friend. Choose a few images early. And make sure these dates are in your calendar.
Start the Season at Club Information Night

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. Please use the east door nearest the parking lot. Free parking is available in the church lot.
Once inside, turn left and follow the hallway to the main hall. The entrance is wheelchair accessible, with step-free access and accessible washrooms.
This is our first meeting of the season and a friendly introduction to how the club works. We will introduce the board and share what is coming up, including:
- Presentations and learning opportunities
- Live Shoots
- Photo Reviews and critiques
- Competitions and judging
- Field trips and photo outings
- Club activities and ways to participate
This is an information night, not a guest-speaker presentation. It is your chance to see what the club offers, meet other photographers, and get a clear picture of the season ahead.
New to the club? You are welcome.
Guests and prospective members are invited to attend. No registration is required, and your first eligible regular visit is free.
You do not need an expensive camera or years of experience. Bring your DSLR, mirrorless camera, compact camera or smartphone. We welcome beginners, smartphone photographers, hobbyists, students, advanced photographers and working professionals.
You can simply come, listen and meet people. Or jump right in and start planning your first competition entry. There is room for both.
Get Outside for the CAPA Coast to Coast Photo Walk

The Canadian Association for Photographic Art’s Coast to Coast Photo Walk brings photographers together across the country. Our Saskatoon walk is open to everyone:
- CAPA members
- Saskatoon Photography Club members
- Guests and non-members
- Experienced photographers
- Curious beginners
- Smartphone photographers
The walk begins at the Saskatoon Weir and follows a route that combines river views, natural areas and urban scenes:
- Start at the Saskatoon Weir on Spadina Crescent East.
- Cross the CP train bridge to the east riverbank.
- Follow the riverbank toward the Broadway Bridge.
- Cross the Broadway Bridge into downtown.
- Return along the west riverbank to the weir.
You can shoot at your own pace. Spend an hour with us, stay for the morning, or make a full day of it. There will be plenty of opportunities to photograph reflections, bridges, wildlife, textures, architecture and the changing light along the river.
You may even want to pack a lunch, as the group will likely stop in Rotary Park.
The walk lead is Cathleen Mewis, who will help guide the outing. Club members, bring a friend and help us make this a welcoming introduction to the club for new photographers.

The first competition deadlines of the season will arrive quickly. If you are interested in submitting, start reviewing your images now rather than waiting until the final evening.

Fall Competition – Animal Submission Deadline
Submit one digital Animal entry online. The image must be monochrome, in the spirit of the club’s 90th anniversary.
All submission cutoffs are 10:00 p.m. Saskatoon local time. Give yourself extra time to select, prepare and upload your image. Technical surprises are much less stressful when they happen a few days before the deadline instead of a few minutes before it.
Start with your image folders
For the Nature / Wildlife category, look through recent hikes, backyard observations, travel photographs and images from local parks. Wildlife does not have to mean an exotic destination. Saskatoon and the surrounding area offer many opportunities to photograph birds, mammals, insects, plants and natural details.
For the Animal competition, begin thinking in black and white. Look for shape, texture, expression, gesture and contrast. An image that feels ordinary in colour may become much stronger when converted to monochrome. You can also revisit older files with fresh eyes.

Keep October 3 Open for the Fall Field Trip
The Fall Field Trip is now listed for Saturday, October 3, 2026. This corrects the earlier calendar listing of September 19.
At this point, the location and time are still to be confirmed. Please do not rely on the old September date. Instead, check the Fall Field Trip event page for updates as details are finalized.
Guests are welcome, so this will be another excellent opportunity to bring someone who enjoys photography but has not attended a club event before.
Make a Simple Plan This Week
You do not need to prepare everything at once. A few small steps now will make the season easier and more enjoyable:
- Add September 15 to your calendar.
- Invite a friend to Club Information Night.
- Charge your batteries and prepare your camera or phone for the September 19 walk.
- Review your Nature / Wildlife folders and flag possible entries.
- Look for an animal image that could work in monochrome.
- Bookmark the submission pages and note the 10:00 p.m. Saskatoon deadlines.
- Check the full club calendar for updates and upcoming meetings.
You do not have to arrive at Club Information Night with a polished portfolio or a competition plan. Just arrive curious.
