We know joining a photography club can bring up a few questions — here are the answers to the ones we hear most often. If you’re still unsure, feel free to contact us.
Membership
Q: Who can join the Saskatoon Photography Club?
A: Anyone with an interest in photography! Whether you’re a beginner with a phone camera or a seasoned professional with a full kit — you’re welcome here.
Q: Do I need a fancy camera to join?
A: Not at all. We welcome all types of cameras — from smartphones to DSLRs and mirrorless systems. It’s about creativity and learning, not gear.
Q: How much is membership?
Membership runs September 1–August 31. All memberships expire August 31; reduced rates apply to new and returning members.
- September 1–December 31: Single $75, Family $90, Student $40.
- January 1–April 30: Single $60, Family $75, Student $25.
- May 1–August 31: Single $35, Family $50, Student $25.
- Life Member: free after 20 cumulative years; annual registration is still required.
- Spouse of a Life Member: $20 per year. The qualifying Life Member must also register for the current year.
All fees are in Canadian dollars. Family membership covers two adults and their dependent children in the same household. Student membership requires valid student ID, with no age restriction; provide ID if requested, without uploading it during registration.
Q: When can I join?
A: You can join at any time. Regular meetings run September–April, with individually scheduled summer activities May–August. Complete annual registration and any applicable payment to activate membership.
Meetings & Events
Q: When and where does the club meet?
A: We meet on selected Tuesdays from September through April at McClure United Church, 4025 Taylor Street East, Saskatoon. Doors typically open at 6:30 p.m.; meetings usually run 7–9 p.m. Check the calendar for each event. Free parking is available; use the accessible east entrance nearest the parking lot, then turn left down the hallway to the main large hall.
Q: Can I attend a meeting before joining?
A: Your first eligible regular visit is free, with no advance registration required. Subsequent regular visits cost $20. Designated paid Special Meetings are included for members and cost $20 for non-members. Check attendance details: online meetings, Photo Reviews, Judging/Results Nights, Christmas and the AGM are members only. Orientation is free for members, guests and prospective members.
Q: What happens at a typical meeting?
A: Meetings include guest speakers, member photo reviews, live shoots, competition nights, and social events.
Q: Are any meetings held online?
A: Yes — a small number of presentations are hosted via Zoom, and these are clearly marked on our online calendar so members can easily join remotely. Online presentations and meetings are members only.
Q: What does the coffee bar cost?
A: For 2026/27, coffee, tea and hot chocolate are $1; French Vanilla Cappuccino is $2; cookies and snacks are $1 each. View the Coffee Bar Menu.
Competitions & Reviews
Q: How do the competitions work?
A: We host seasonal competitions with creative themes. Members submit digital images which are judged by professionals or experienced club members. Print competition takes place at Year End only. Check the current event-specific rules for categories and entry limits. An image entered in any official SPC competition cannot be entered again, including at Year End.
Q: I’m new — are competitions beginner-friendly?
A: Definitely. Our competitions are a great way to challenge yourself and get better. Beginners are encouraged to enter!
Q: What’s a Photo Review night?
A: Photo Reviews are scheduled, members-only feedback nights. Submitters are expected to attend. Images are presented anonymously, but keep your name in the submission filename. You do not need to have attended the corresponding Live Shoot to submit. A review-only image can later be revised and entered in a competition. Submissions close at 10 p.m. local time on the published due date.
Q: What is the Treasure Hunt?
A: A fun annual challenge where you photograph five creative prompts (like “Hat” or “Harvest Gold”) — all in one themed submission.
